Racing Incident Report
FLYING IBIS was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore foot). Before being allowed to race again, FLYING IBIS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
HO HO LIFE began only fairly.
From wide barriers, SURE CHAMP and HEI HEI POSH were taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
Passing the 1700 Metres, FORTUNE BRAVO got its head on the side when being steadied to allow ZACHARY to cross.
Near the 1600 Metres, SUPER STRIKE raced tight between EAGLE SPIRIT and HO HO LIFE which shifted in slightly.
Approaching the 400 Metres, ZACHARY and FORTUNE BRAVO raced tight as ZACHARY shifted to the outside of REAL GENERAL into clear running.
SURE CHAMP had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight and after the 200 Metres was steadied when initially disappointed for running to the outside of OXFORD CHARLEY.
Over the concluding stages, FORTUNE BRAVO was steadied when crowded for room between REAL GENERAL which was racing tight outside SURE CHAMP and SUPER STRIKE (T Angland) which shifted in under pressure. T Angland was reprimanded and reminded of his obligation to stop riding and straighten his mounts at the earliest opportunity when they shift ground.
D Whyte stated that HO HO LIFE changed legs on a number of occasions in the race and particularly along the Back Straight. He said after the 600 Metres he considered going around runners, however, he did not believe that HO HO LIFE was travelling well enough to make a sustained run, therefore he elected to continue to follow SUPER STRIKE forward. He said when the field quickened near the 500 Metres, HO HO LIFE was left flat-footed and despite being placed under pressure did not quicken. He added he rode HO HO LIFE out vigorously in the Straight, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and raced disappointingly. A veterinary inspection of HO HO LIFE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ZACHARY, A Suborics stated that after being able to obtain a good position behind the leader, ZACHARY travelled well in the early and middle stages. He said he shifted ZACHARY out away from the rail after the 500 Metres to make its run to the outside of horses in the Straight, however, ZACHARY did not quicken when asked for an effort prior to the Home Turn and in the Straight was disappointing in its failure to close off the race. A veterinary inspection of ZACHARY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
FORTUNE BRAVO, OXFORD CHARLEY and SUPER STRIKE were sent for sampling.
