Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the course, it was noted that ISLAND WEST TREBLE had spread its near side hind plate. This was re-plated. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and passed suitable to race. When the gates opened, HONEST DRAGON bounded in the air. About the 600 Metres, KOH-I-NOOR became unbalanced when awkward between RED IN GREEN and PERFECT STAR which was stopping quickly. At this time some inconvenience was also caused to ISLAND WEST TREBLE. In the early stages, AUTHORISED was inclined to pull and throw its head about. W M Lai (AUTHORISED) pleaded guilty to a charge of improper riding [Rule 132(i)]. The improper riding being that at about the 200 Metres after looking to his inside he improperly reached out with his right arm and with his whip struck Apprentice S K Sit (HONEST DRAGON) on or in the vicinity of the head. After considering all the circumstances of this case, taking into account all the submissions made, the Stewards were of the view the appropriate penalty was that W M Lai be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday, 15 January 2001 on which day he may resume race riding. The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Sha Tin on Tuesday, 26 December 2000. E Legrix (GOOD TIME FOR ALL) said he rode the horse in such a manner as to endeavour to ensure it settled. He said throughout the race he followed DECOUVERT and running to the Home Turn was undecided as to whether to improve inside that horse or on its outside. He said he momentarily went to the outside of DECOUVERT, but when that horse shifted out, he considered shifting in, but in the circumstances elected to shift out to try and go forward in the run to the line. He said in hindsight it may have been better for him to have improved inside DECOUVERT. He did go on to say as he has said previously that GOOD TIME FOR ALL would probably be better suited over slightly lesser ground than today. He said in such a race he would be able to ride GOOD TIME FOR ALL more forward and the horse would be easier to settle. NEW ASIANS was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that PERFECT STAR had bled from both nostrils.
