Racing Incident Report

ROMANTIC SYMPHONY was slowly away. BOND jumped awkwardly. Rounding the first turn, SPLENDID PATROL commenced to hang out and shortly afterwards ran off. As a consequence of this, STRONGHEART was checked, STERLING STAR and FORTUNE MAKER were inconvenienced and obliged to race considerably wider for almost the entire Back Straight. The performance of SPLENDID PATROL was considered to be unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend. In the Straight, NIGHT STAR hung in. The Stewards deferred the declaration of Weighed-In. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast sufficient doubt on whether BOND (W Woods) should be declared the winner of the race. Before Weighed-In was declared, F Naude (KIMBER), 2nd placegetter, sought permission to view the official videos as he was of the view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which may have provided grounds for an objection. After viewing the available video films, he formed the view that on this occasion it would be inappropriate to proceed with a formal objection. The Stewards formed a similar view and did not conduct a formal inquiry under Rule 151(iv). Accordingly the placings as semaphored by the Judge were confirmed. It was established just after the 200 Metres KIMBER shifted out slightly, then over about the last 100 Metres BOND shifted in and on two occasions brushed with KIMBER. The Stewards allowed Mr G Lane, Trainer of BOND, an opportunity of explaining the improved performance of the horse tonight when compared with its run some weeks ago at Sha Tin. Mr Lane said the horse last ran at Sha Tin late in April and was only having its second run in about 6 months. He said that run was disappointing and he again allowed the horse some time off. He assured the Stewards there had not been any change in the work being done by BOND, but he had removed the blinkers and hood which the horse had been racing in. He said tonight in the pre-race parade BOND did appear to be brighter and paraded keenly. He said at its last start it was ridden by his Apprentice, but for tonight's race, when entries came out he allowed Apprentice M W Leung to take the ride on NIGHT STAR which he had also ridden at its last run. Mr Lane also pointed out BOND was tonight having its first race start at Happy Valley although the horse had trialed here. He said he did hope the horse would improve, but to win did surprise him. He also pointed out a number of runners were inconvenienced by SPLENDID PATROL on the first turn and this would obviously have enhanced the chances of BOND. The Stewards considered in all the circumstances the explanations submitted by Mr Lane be accepted. SUPREME CAT was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. Subsequent to the race, the Veterinary Surgeon said BOND was abnormally distressed. Before racing again, BOND will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
