Racing Incident Report

GOLDEN WARRIOR was withdrawn on 12.10.01 on veterinary grounds (lame near fore foot) and replaced by Standby Declared Starter WINNING STAR (Apprentice S K Sit). Before racing again, GOLDEN WARRIOR will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. On jumping, ZABETTE threw its head up. DRAGON WIN jumped very awkwardly. SMART MONEY was slowly away. Just after the start, WELLDONE KID and TREMENDOUS WAY came together. When EXTRAORDINARY commenced to give ground near the 800 Metres, WELLDONE KID was held up behind it and lost considerable ground. Inconvenience was also caused to TREMENDOUS WAY. Near the 600 Metres, MONZA KING shifted out to go forward, caused some inconvenience to ZABETTE and obliged that horse to race wider. Just after straightening, FLORAL CHEERS was taken in onto the heels of FUN MANAGER and became unnecessarily unbalanced. It was established that in the run to the turn, FLORAL CHEERS had travelled in a position behind FUN MANAGER, about the 500 Metres shifted to the outside of FUN MANAGER which was shifting out slightly, in doing so FLORAL CHEERS had established running between FUN MANAGER and MONZA KING (E Saint-Martin). Then just after the 400 Metres, E Saint-Martin (MONZA KING) shifted in to be racing beside FUN MANAGER, this resulted in FLORAL CHEERS losing its running, getting close to the heels of FUN MANAGER and becoming unbalanced. It was decided that no direct action would be taken, but E Saint-Martin was reprimanded and told every jockey in Hong Kong has a right to hold his ground, but today the tight riding he had displayed had gone to the limit of that which can be condoned and he must exercise more care and consideration for his fellow riders in future. T Culhane (EXTRAORDINARY) explained he noted the horse had made an abnormal breathing noise previously, today it was decided to ride it more quietly and endeavour to ensure the horse was settled and relaxed in the run. He explained EXTRAORDINARY only travelled well until about the 800 Metres, but then gave ground quickly, was clearly having trouble with its breathing and he eased the horse down. EXTRAORDINARY was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. The Veterinary Surgeon said that after the race EXTRAORDINARY trotted up sound, in his opinion was not making a respiratory noise. An endoscopic examination was carried out and this indicated the horse had a normal larynx and a clean windpipe. The Veterinary Surgeon also said the horse's heart was regular. He did go on to say during the race EXTRAORDINARY might have displaced its soft palate and choked up. He said this can happen with horses and by the time they return to scale it can be corrected. Before racing again, EXTRAORDINARY will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After riding MONEY STAR, G Mossé collapsed in the Weighing Room and was not able to fulfil his engagement on GRAND FIGHTER in Race 2. Permission was granted for B Marcus to be substituted. G Mossé was examined by the Club's doctor who said in her opinion was unfit and should not fulfil his further engagements today. After he spent some time recovering G Mossé sought an interview with the Stewards and pointed out he had some food and drink and he was confident with some rest he would be able to ride later in the day. He was advised that the Stewards were not prepared to overrule the decision made by the Club's doctor. Subsequent to this, G Mossé and Trainer P C Kan sought further time with the Stewards and Mr Kan put a similar proposition in that he believed G Mossé as an experienced rider and with time should be allowed to ride later in the programme. The Stewards further considered the matter, but on all the circumstances before them were not prepared to disregard the decision of the doctor in any way and advised Mr Kan and Jockey Mossé that Jockey Mossé would not be allowed to ride for the rest of the programme which was in accordance with the doctor's instruction.
