Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, GOLDEN BELL bounded in the air, then shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of ORLANDO FLYER. On leaving the gates, FAITHFUL ASSURANCE threw its head up, then from an outside draw was steadied and shifted across behind other runners to take up a position close to the rail but at the rear. About the 1000 Metres, GOLDEN BELL lost its position when awkwardly placed between FOR SZESZE and WINWIN COMBINATION. ORLANDO FLYER (D Dunn) made the Home Turn awkwardly and shifted out from behind BOXING DAY. As a consequence of this, HOLY RANTO, which was giving ground, was carried onto the heels of TRY YOUR BEST and checked. Whilst the occurrence in the opinion of the Stewards was accidental, D Dunn was advised to exercise more care. In the early part of the Straight, TRUSTY STEED was steadied and shifted in to avoid DIAMOND KING which was awkward behind HOLY RANTO and again at about the 300 Metres TRUSTY STEED was steadied and shifted out to avoid HOLY RANTO. About 100 Metres out, the whip of J Egan (FOR SZESZE) broke. Apprentice K C Tsang (BOXING DAY) explained before the race the trainer had instructed him as the horse had drawn a bad gate to ride along in the early stages and take up a position somewhere near the front. He said BOXING DAY jumped well, but as he was crossing to try and get a position behind the leaders, HOLY RANTO shifted together with him and he was not able to find a position behind that horse and he believed in the circumstances he had little alternative but to go forward and lead. The explanations submitted by Apprentice K C Tsang were accepted. Apprentice S K Sit (TRY YOUR BEST) said from the inside gate he had been instructed to ride the horse along and lead if possible. He said on leaving the gates TRY YOUR BEST had a tendency to shift out, he pulled the whip in an endeavour to take up a front position as instructed. He said running towards the first turn as BOXING DAY and HOLY RANTO crossed him, he felt in his opinion he had room to shift out from behind HOLY RANTO and race inside ABSOLUTE, this put him into a position on the outside of HOLY RANTO. The Stewards were concerned with the riding tactics adopted by Apprentice S K Sit at this stage of the race, his move away from the running rail had on the face of it made little sense, in addition to this ABSOLUTE was obliged to race wider than it should have been. As a result of ABSOLUTE being taken out by TRY YOUR BEST, some inconvenience was caused to EMPEROR. Apprentice S K Sit went on to say TRY YOUR BEST had a tendency to get out on leaving the gates, running towards the first turn again got its head on the side and shifted away from HOLY RANTO. In view of all the circumstances, no action was taken, but Apprentice S K Sit was told his riding in the early stages had in many ways been questioned. He was also told he must endeavour to display greater riding skills in future than he did today. When asked about the improved performance of ORLANDO FLYER today, Mr D A Hayes, trainer of the horse, said since the horse's last run he had significantly increased its work pattern which he said the horse had taken to and clearly went into today's race well. Mr Hayes did say the quality of today's race was not good and added that ORLANDO FLYER has been leaving the gates slowly and last Thursday on the Riverside Gallop ORLANDO FLYER had been put through the stalls and ridden along hard when the gates opened, but then was steadied about the 200 Metres down the track. He said last Tuesday the horse had been given some sharp work with better quality horses which was good work. Mr Hayes said he did expect ORLANDO FLYER to improve today and indeed was fancied by the stable, however, Mr Hayes was surprised with the odds that were available. D Dunn said he had ridden ORLANDO FLYER in some of its work since its last run, he had ridden it last Thursday on the Riverside Gallop. He said today ORLANDO FLYER jumped better, but again did not come out as cleanly as it should. He said in the middle stages due to the way in which the race was run he found himself in a perfect position on the rail behind the leader, then on the Home Turn was able to shift out into the clear. The Stewards decided that the explanations submitted by Mr Hayes and D Dunn be accepted. D Whyte DIAMOND KING) said from a good gate the horse travelled satisfactorily about midfield as intended, but then commenced to give ground on straightening and over the concluding stages was very disappointing. He did say he felt the horse was not right in its action over the concluding stages. F Coetzee (HOLY RANTO) said he had been instructed from an outside draw to ride along and if possible to lead or certainly take up a position near the front. He said HOLY RANTO left the gates well and in accordance with the instructions he had been given by the trainer he rode along to take up a forward position. He said he was not able to lead, the horse just drawn outside him at the start did settle at the front. He said on the Home Turn HOLY RANTO was unbalanced when crowded by ORLANDO FLYER which shifted out, but at this stage HOLY RANTO was starting to give ground. He said with the benefit of hindsight he might have made too much use of HOLY RANTO from the outside gate in the early stages. DIAMOND KING and HOLY RANTO were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
