Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, GOLDEN KING bounded in the air. SUPER COMBINATION came out very awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with the shoulder of STAR OF WAH YAN. Turning out of the Straight the first time, LEAD TO WIN was steadied when racing close to the heels of SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT. In the early and middle stages, STAR OF WAH YAN proved difficult to settle and on occasions got its head up when close behind SUPER COMBINATION. About the 600 Metres, SUPER COMBINATION was steadied when disappointed for running inside MASTER MARAUDER. On straightening, SUPER COMBINATION became unbalanced and shifted out abruptly across the heels of STAR OF TAI PO, this caused some inconvenience to LEAD TO WIN. The Stewards allowed Mr D Cruz, trainer of BOBO DUCK, an opportunity of explaining the improved run of the horse tonight when compared with its run at Sha Tin on 17 October 2001. Mr Cruz said the horse was well fancied by the stable at Sha Tin and was generally disappointing that day. He said after that race D Whyte, who had ridden the horse that day, suggested a change of gear might help BOBO DUCK and recommended a visor be applied. Mr Cruz said he offered the ride tonight to D Whyte, but he elected to take the mount on MASTER MARAUDER. Mr Cruz pointed out BOBO DUCK had trialed recently at Happy Valley and in his opinion its trial was encouraging, but at most he gave the horse an outside chance tonight after being so disappointed with the Sha Tin run. The explanations submitted by Mr Cruz were accepted. When questioned, E Legrix (INDY'S GEM) said he had ridden the horse previously and ridden it from a rearward position. He said the trainer pointed out to him yesterday that in the two runs INDY'S GEM had so far this season the horse when running in blinkers had been inclined to pull, race forward and not finish the race off at all. He said today without blinkers he had been instructed to endeavour to ride INDY'S GEM from a difficult gate back in the field, find cover and ensure the horse was relaxed. He said he was able to carry out the instructions given, but then in the Straight INDY'S GEM did not close the race off as he had hoped and again was somewhat disappointing. The explanations submitted by E Legrix were accepted. MASTER MARAUDER was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
