Racing Incident Report
SPEEDY FORWARD jumped very awkwardly and threw its head about. On leaving the gates, SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT and PRODIGY bumped. On straightening, SPEEDY FORWARD shifted out and endeavoured to find running, was unable to do so, then shifted in abruptly across the heels of SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT to continue going forward. The Stewards allowed W M Lai, rider of ORIENTAL TREASURE, and Mr Danny Shum, assistant trainer to Mr I W Allan, trainer of the horse, an opportunity of explaining its improved run tonight when compared with its run at Sha Tin on 2 February 2002. Mr Shum said ORIENTAL TREASURE had won first up this season at Happy Valley and after that sustained a significant injury to its off hip and it took some time before the horse could return to the track. Its first run on 5 January 2002 after the injury was encouraging and the connections expected the horse to run well at Sha Tin on 2 February 2002, but the run was disappointing. Mr Shum said whilst Mr Allan is out of town tonight, he did instruct Jockey Lai to give the horse a good liven up before it was boxed and from the inside gate ensure it jumped well. Mr Shum also said the horse does have some suspensory problem and it is treated usually twice a week at the veterinary hospital by way of shockwave treatment. He said so far as the training of ORIENTAL TREASURE is concerned, it only does light work and that was always the practice before tonight's run. W M Lai said he enjoyed a reasonable run in the race at Sha Tin, but in the middle stages the horse was not able to keep up and was overall disappointing whereas tonight he enjoyed a good run throughout. Both Mr Shum and Jockey Lai were convinced that ORIENTAL TREASURE does race better at Happy Valley. The explanations submitted by Mr Shum and Jockey Lai were tonight accepted. When asked about the performance of LUCKY COMBINATION, S Dye said whilst on the face of it the performance would be seen by many to be disappointing, he was of the view that when all the circumstances of the race were considered, the run was better than it might have looked. He said from an outside gate he had been instructed to try and ride the horse quietly and ensure it settled. He said LUCKY COMBINATION jumped much better than anticipated and there was a chance that he might have been able to be one off the rail and further forward than expected, however, EXCEL KID improved on his inside and he was obliged to race wide throughout and at no stage was able to find any cover. He also said tonight LUCKY COMBINATION, which was racing at Happy Valley for the first time, was not happy on the track at any stage. He said near the 500 Metres LUCKY COMBINATION momentarily lost its footing and stumbled, after this obviously he had to stop riding, re-balance the horse before endeavouring to go forward. He said in the Straight the horse was well beaten, however, he did pull the whip only because the horse was highly fancied and had it not been he would not have hit the horse with the whip at all. LUCKY COMBINATION was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
