Racing Incident Report

Whilst being saddled, GOLDEN STRIDE became fractious and kicked out, sustaining a laceration to the outside of its off side hind leg. The Veterinary Surgeon said in his opinion GOLDEN STRIDE was not suitable to race. Accordingly the horse was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, GOLDEN STRIDE will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. The start of the race was delayed as SOLAR EMPIRE was difficult to load. Before being allowed to race again, SOLAR EMPIRE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. KALIMANTAN left the gates very awkwardly, shifted in and became unbalanced. In the middle stages, GOLDEN GONG became momentarily unbalanced, hung in and was awkward on the heels of SAMMY TREASURE. Then in the Straight, GOLDEN GOING continued to hang in and proved somewhat difficult to ride out. In the early part of the Straight, KALIMANTAN was shifted out to avoid SOLAR EMPIRE, then near the 200 Metres, whilst was making ground was steadied and shifted out to avoid CAPITAL GAIN. About the 100 Metres, MR BEAUTIFUL was steadied when momentarily tightened between THE DUKE which shifted in slightly and GOLDEN GONG. Y T Cheng (SOLAR EMPIRE) explained the horse had proved difficult to box and after being loaded he became aware some packing under the saddle including the lead bag had shifted. He said he did not ask for the horse to be released and have it re-saddled as he was of the view he corrected the equipment satisfactorily before the start. He said however almost immediately on leaving the gates, the saddle began to shift and he was at a considerable disadvantage. About the 800 Metres, as the saddle was shifting badly to the near side, he thought he had no option but to take his feet from the irons and continued in the race as best he could. After the race, Y T Cheng was examined by the Club's doctor who said in his opinion he was fit to continue with his engagements. When questioned, W C Marwing (THE DUKE) said if the horse left the gates well, he may have led. He went on to say however THE DUKE does have a history of being awkward from the start and today left the gates poorly with its head up. He said he rode along in an endeavour to keep DONGGUAN EXCELS out, but was unable to do so, steadied and took up a position behind that runner. W C Marwing went on to say near the 600 Metres he was aware Y T Cheng (SOLAR EMPIRE) was in a lot of trouble outside the leader, he endeavoured to shift out, but was held behind DONGGUAN EXCELS by COUNTRY BOY and for some distance after this was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DONGGUAN EXCELS and just inside the hindquarters of SOLAR EMPIRE. He said then for some distance after the 400 Metres, he continued to be held up behind DONGGUAN EXCELS and was not able to improve until SOLAR EMPIRE dropped back. The explanations submitted by W C Marwing were accepted. THE DUKE was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
