Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, MULTI-WIN became fractious and broke through riderless. Acting on veterinary advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of MULTI-WIN after the horse had completed the course before being recaptured. Because of this, the start of the race was delayed. Before MULTI-WIN can race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. FAIRWAY FINDER, which was standing awkwardly, began with its head up and shifted out. Shortly after the start, SPEED AT EASE was steadied when crowded for room between EVEN TILDEN and FORTUNE ROAD which was taken out by AMITY. Near the 200 Metres, ETERNAL START became unbalanced and shifted out. After the 100 Metres, EVEN TILDEN, which was giving ground, and NEWSWIRE became unbalanced when crowded for room between SPEED AT EASE which shifted in and AMITY which shifted out. In the circumstances, no action was taken. E Saint-Martin (SPEED AT EASE) said he had been riding the horse in its recent work and this work in his opinion had been good. He said he ensured SPEED AT EASE began well, however, the horse failed to muster early speed despite his riding and then was crowded shortly after the start. He said following this SPEED AT EASE in his opinion raced like an inexperienced horse and when placed under pressure in the Straight did not respond. He said he noted following the race that SPEED AT EASE was having a "good blow". W C Marwing (VILLAGER) said the intention had been to lead tonight and accordingly he rode his mount along hard in the early stages, however, it did not show the necessary speed to clear EVEN TILDEN and FORTUNE ROAD, therefore it was obliged to race three wide outside the lead. He said VILLAGER became unbalanced making the turn at the 700 Metres, was then inclined to hang out and commenced to give ground shortly afterwards. He said in his opinion the way the race was run in the early stages and the manner in which he had to ride VILLAGER in an effort to carry out his instructions accounted for the horse's poor performance tonight. VILLAGER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, VILLAGER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. SPEED AT EASE, FORTUNE ROAD and ETERNAL START were sent for sampling.
