Racing Incident Report

MARSHALL SPIRIT bounded in the air at the start and lost some ground. LIGHTNING BOLT got its head up at the start. Shortly after the start, UNBELIEVABLE got its head on the side, shifted out and was checked away from the heels of AMITY which itself was momentarily steadied away from the heels of HONOURABLE (H K Yim) which shifted in when not quite clear. H K Yim was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Near the 800 Metres, SIGHT CHAMPION, which was hanging in, became unbalanced, shifted in and bumped ACE OF PACE on two occasions. At the 700 Metres, AMITY got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of LIGHTNING BOLT (Apprentice P H Lo) which shifted in when not clear. Apprentice P H Lo was severely reprimanded and told a repetition of this type of riding could not be condoned. At the 600 Metres, PERFECT SPORT and GOOD CHANCE were steadied when crowded for room by SCREAMING EAGLE (Apprentice C K Tong) which shifted in abruptly when not clear. As Apprentice C K Tong had not been previously spoken to regarding incidents such as this, it was considered appropriate to issue a severe reprimand. Shortly after this, SCREAMING EAGLE bumped the running rail and became unbalanced. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, MARSHALL SPIRIT hung out, shifted ground and bumped FOOD LOVER. For some distance after the 600 Metres, SIGHT CHAMPION and ACE OF PACE raced tight due mainly to ACE OF PACE endeavouring to shift out to go forward. In the Straight, SIGHT CHAMPION got its head up on the side, hung in and proved difficult to ride out. S Dye (MARSHALL SPIRIT) explained he had intended to ride the horse in a more forward position, however, after bounding in the air at the start the horse got further back than he had wished. He said after this he allowed MARSHALL SPIRIT to become balanced and this meant racing in a rearward position. He said making the first turn MARSHALL SPIRIT hung out and lost ground, then at the 400 Metres again got its head up when momentarily crowded for room between UNBELIEVABLE and PERFECT SPORT which shifted out slightly. He did say his horse made this incident look a lot worse than it actually was. He said then in the Straight MARSHALL SPIRIT only closed off fairly. MARSHALL SPIRIT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, MARSHALL SPIRIT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. SIGHT CHAMPION was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, SIGHT CHAMPION, which was making an abnormal breathing noise, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination showed the horse to be an early "roarer". HONOURABLE and ACE OF PACE were sent for sampling.
