Racing Incident Report

EPIC EXPRESSION was slow to begin. On jumping FIRST KNIGHT knuckled. At the 200 Metres, VICTORY MOUNT, which was giving ground, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of ELITE WIN which shifted out. After the 100 Metres, EPIC EXPRESSION was inconvenienced when WAH YAN MASCOT shifted out. In the Straight, CHATER LANE hung in and proved difficult to ride, near the winning post shifted ground and made contact with STEP FORWARD. Also in the Straight, SHOW BRAVELY hung in. K H Ting (FIRST KNIGHT), a last start winner, was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's poor performance today. He said he had been instructed from a wide barrier to immediately shift his horse across behind runners onto the rail and then race in a rearward position. He said he followed these instructions in the early stages and the horse travelled comfortably, however, after the 600 Metres when put under pressure, FIRST KNIGHT did not respond to his riding and in the Straight gave ground to finish tailed off. He said FIRST KNIGHT felt sound in its action both during and following the race. He added whilst he had not been riding FIRST KNIGHT in its track work, the stable had indicated to him that the horse was considered to be at least a place chance in today's race. FIRST KNIGHT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, FIRST KNIGHT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. Before being permitted to race again, FIRST KNIGHT will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. STEP FORWARD, SHOW BRAVELY and SMART WIN were sent for sampling.
