Racing Incident Report

On the way to the barriers near the 800 Metres, A Delpech was dislodged from ONLY YOU. ONLY YOU then galloped a considerable distance before being recaptured. Acting on veterinary advice that ONLY YOU was not suitable to race, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the horse. ELFHELM was slow to begin. On jumping, ENGINEERING WONDER got its head up and lost ground. BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY began awkwardly, bumped the inside gate of its stall and was then shifted away from the hindquarters of AFRICAN FOREST. FOUR ACES began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of KEEP ON EASY which also began awkwardly. In the early stages, AFRICAN FOREST raced ungenerously and proved difficult to settle. In the middle stages, ELFHELM hung out and then in the Straight gave ground and finished tailed out. ELFHELM was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, ELFHELM was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. The performance of ELFHELM was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ELFHELM will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the 300 Metres, AFRICAN FOREST and THE WORLD OF LOVE were steadied when disappointed for running between SIR OCTAVIUS and HOLY QUEST which when giving ground was carried wider by BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY which when endeavouring to improve outside the heels of SUPER PRINCE was carried out by that horse which was hanging. After the 200 Metres, THE WORLD OF LOVE was again disappointed for running between SIR OCTAVIUS and KEEP ON EASY, then after the 100 Metres THE WORLD OF LOVE was steadied away from the heels of SIR OCTAVIUS, shifted to the outside of that horse, however, was not able to obtain clear running between SIR OCTAVIUS and KEEP ON EASY and therefore was not ridden out to the end of the race. Near the 50 Metres, ENGINEERING WONDER shifted to the outside of MASTER YING and was momentarily steadied away from the heels of SIGHT CHAMPION. Apprentice M W Leung (ENGINEERING WONDER) said he had ridden this horse earlier in its career and on those occasions when racing without cover the horse had hung out. He said in discussing today's race with Mr L Ho, the trainer of ENGINEERING WONDER, it was agreed where possible he should obtain a position close to the rail and inside runners to prevent ENGINEERING WONDER hanging. He said ENGINEERING WONDER began awkwardly, immediately ELFHELM which had drawn to his inside continued forward on his inside and prevented him from being able to shift in close to the fence. He said as a result ENGINEERING WONDER was racing without cover near the rear, near the 800 Metres commenced to hang out, he therefore elected to further steady ENGINEERING WONDER to enable ELFHELM to go forward so he could shift across behind that runner to race on the fence. The explanation of Apprentice Leung was accepted. Mr C S Shum, the trainer of DOUBLE DIP, said when the horse had its first start in Hong Kong, he had instructed its rider, W M Lai, on that occasion to ride the horse with some cover. He said throughout that race DOUBLE DIP raced greenly and was most disappointing. He said immediately after the race DOUBLE DIP continued to be somewhat green during track work and after having a discussion with O Doleuze who had been riding the horse, it was decided to ride it in a more forward position. He said when being ridden forward, DOUBLE DIP had trialed well and whilst he had placed it under more pressure in its work, it had continued to show improvement in the mornings. He said despite drawing barrier 14 today, he had instructed O Doleuze to ensure he went forward and led if possible in accordance with the manner in which it had been working. Mr Shum said the improved performance of DOUBLE DIP could be attributed to it gaining more experience and being able to obtain a comfortable lead today. BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY after the race did not show any significant findings. THE WORLD OF LOVE, DOUBLE DIP and MASTER YING were sent for sampling. After the race, D Whyte (KEEP ON EASY) reported the horse to be making an abnormal breathing noise. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said an endoscopic examination did not show any significant findings.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 29 March 2004)
ELFHELM, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. ELFHELM was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P F Yiu yesterday morning. He said at this time the horse was noted to have a stiff and restricted action of both hind limbs and heat in the left front fetlock joint. As previously advised, ELFHELM will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before racing again.
