Racing Incident Report
AURELIAN was slow to begin. DESERT STRIKE, A BETTER DRAGON and DANEPRINT began awkwardly and lost ground. QI'S PET was slow into stride and then after the 1200 Metres was steadied away from the heels of VITAL PATROL and shifted in to a position on the rail. Shortly after the start, TRIUMPHANT GLORY became unbalanced and blundered when crowded for room between MR GENKI which shifted out slightly and CLEAN SWEEP which on jumping shifted in. After the 200 Metres, MR GENKI got its head on the side and hung out. Near the 100 Metres, B Prebble (HAPPY TOGETHER), which was hanging out, dropped his whip when endeavouring to pull it through to the left hand. In the Straight, DESERT STRIKE hung in. Throughout the race, TRIUMPHANT GLORY raced wide and without cover. When questioned, D Whyte (CLEAN SWEEP) explained he had been instructed from a barrier towards the outside to ride the horse which was having the first start for the new stable today and racing without blinkers in a more forward position than usual if he was able to do so without having to make use of the horse. He said he therefore intended to ride CLEAN SWEEP in midfield or slightly better. He said CLEAN SWEEP began best, he immediately allowed runners on his inside to improve through with the hope of being able to obtain a position with cover. He said after the 1100 Metres when racing outside VITAL PATROL he hoped that horse would shift to the fence which would enable him to obtain a position with cover. He said when VITAL PATROL did not shift in, QI'S PET improved on the inside of that horse, he therefore allowed CLEAN SWEEP to come back off VITAL PATROL and travel comfortably. He said to have maintained the position outside VITAL PATROL in his opinion would have required him to ride along which was contrary to his instructions. He said near the 800 Metres he did apply a little pressure to CLEAN SWEEP to prevent TRIUMPHANT GLORY which had improved around his outside crossing in front of him. He said as a consequence of the manner in which he rode the horse in the early stages CLEAN SWEEP got further back than intended. D Whyte was told in the opinion of the Stewards his riding of CLEAN SWEEP in the early stages of the race after having begun so well lacked the judgement expected from a rider of his standing. His explanation was recorded. CLEAN SWEEP, HAPPY TOGETHER and VITAL PATROL were sent for sampling.
