Racing Incident Report

After arriving in the Parade Ring, COTTON BALL, which had kicked out and made contact with a rail when being led to pre-race weighing, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was trotted up and considered suitable to race. SYLLABUS, which was fractious in the gates, sprawled on jumping and lost ground. Making the turn after the winning post the first time, HAPPY CONTENDER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of WATCHMAN which shifted in when not properly clear. After the 1200 Metres, as HAPPY CONTENDER improved towards the outside of WATCHMAN, WATCHMAN commenced to over-race and proved difficult to settle. Shortly after straightening, SYLLABUS became unbalanced, shifted in and bumped the running rail. In the Straight, DEEP PURPLE hung out. M Rodd (WINNING RONGRONG) reported throughout the race the horse hung out and because of this entering the Back Straight he allowed WINNING RONGRONG to stride forward and cross to the fence in the lead. When questioned regarding the improved performance of OUT OF MY WAY, Mr S Woods, the trainer of the horse, said recently when racing in blinkers the horse had raced closer to the lead. He said today it was anticipated the pace of the race would be genuine and therefore the intention with the blinkers removed had been to have OUT OF MY WAY travel where it was comfortable. He said OUT OF MY WAY appreciated the tempo of today's race and S Sanders, the horse's rider, reported in the Straight the horse was still reluctant to finish the race off. Mr Woods said the intention in future will be to have OUT OF MY WAY travel where it is comfortable racing, however, if there is a slow tempo the rider will be told that it will be acceptable to allow the horse to stride forward to ensure a decent position because OUT OF MY WAY is a one-paced type. COTTON BALL was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of COTTON BALL after the race did not show any significant findings. HAPPY CONTENDER, OUT OF MY WAY and MONZA KING were sent for sampling.
