Racing Incident Report

ONE EYE JACK was slow to begin. Near the 500 Metres, PURPLE GOLD was crowded for room inside HIGHLAND DAWN which got its head on the side and shifted in momentarily. At the 400 Metres, HIGHLAND DAWN was steadied when crowded for room between PURPLE GOLD and MR PRESIDENT which at this time shifted towards the inside of the heels of TOURELLE LAD which was giving ground. In the Straight, PURPLE GOLD hung in and proved difficult to ride. Throughout the race, JUSTINIAN, which had drawn the outside gate, raced wide and without cover. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the view an incident had occurred after the 100 Metres which cast doubt on whether PURPLE GOLD should be declared the 2nd placegetter. After viewing the available videos and all members of the panel expressed their opinions, the Stewards were satisfied this was not an appropriate case to proceed with a formal protest/objection hearing as they believed after the 100 Metres MAMOUSKA was carried wider on the track by SUNNY DESERT and as a result made contact with PURPLE GOLD which was hanging in. As such weighed-in was semaphored, confirming the Judge's placings. Y T Cheng (GLORIOUS LIGHT) explained after straightening he commenced to ride the horse hands and heels, near the 200 Metres struck his mount with the whip, however, when it did not quicken he decided to continue riding his mount out vigorously hands and heels in the run to the line. The explanation submitted by Y T Cheng was accepted. When questioned, Apprentice C K Tong (MR PRESIDENT) said at the 500 Metres he was aware TOURELLE LAD was commencing to give ground and at that time appeared to be shifting wider on the track into almost a three wide position. He said because of this rather than improve around TOURELLE LAD at this time he positioned his mount towards the inside of that horse in the hope he would be able to make a run closer to the rail to save ground, however, shortly after the 400 Metres TOURELLE LAD shifted back in which meant there was insufficient room to improve, he therefore steadied his mount and shifted to the outside of that horse. The explanation submitted by Apprentice Tong was accepted. C Soumillon (HIGHLAND DAWN), which performed poorly, said prior to the race HIGHLAND DAWN seemed more agitated than at its last start. He said in the barriers HIGHLAND DAWN stood badly and consequently was slow to begin. He said then HIGHLAND DAWN travelled somewhat keenly for him, he shifted to a position one off the rail but with cover. He said throughout the race HIGHLAND DAWN did not travel comfortably and was inclined to lay in. He said in the early part of the Straight he rode HIGHLAND DAWN along, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and when it was well beaten he did not continue to ride it out over the concluding stages. C Soumillon said he was not able to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. HIGHLAND DAWN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, HIGHLAND DAWN was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, HIGHLAND DAWN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUNNY DESERT and PURPLE GOLD were sent for sampling.
