Racing Incident Report

A PLUS FIT began awkwardly, then bumped with the hindquarters of COULDN'T CARE LESS which shifted out. CHALLENGER was slow to begin. At the 1400 Metres, MIRACLE DRAGON and KNIGHT TEMPLAR were steadied when crowded for room inside the heels of NATIVE LANGUAGE (Apprentice C W Wong) which shifted in when not quite clear. Apprentice Wong was reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. In the early stages, SILVERBIRD and A PLUS FIT proved difficult to settle. D Whyte (CHEERFUL HAPPINESS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of KNIGHT TEMPLAR, causing that horse to be carried in and in turn caused crowding on its inside to MIRACLE DRAGON and CHALLENGER, as a result of which both horses lost their rightful running and were checked. D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 8 March 2007 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting on Wednesday 28 February 2007. In addition, D Whyte was fined $40,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. Near the 800 Metres, COULDN'T CARE LESS was left racing wide and without cover. After the 400 Metres, COULDN'T CARE LESS was carried wider by SILVERBIRD which at this time shifted to the outside of A PLUS FIT into clear running. Over the concluding stages, A PLUS FIT and SABRE AND GOLD hung in. Also over the concluding stages, DEFLECT shifted wider on the track. For the major part of the Home Straight, MIRACLE DRAGON was held up and unable to obtain clear running. Because of this, MIRACLE DRAGON was not properly tested. When questioned regarding the improved performance of DEFLECT, Mr P F Yiu, trainer of the horse, which was having its second start for his stable today, explained at its most recent start the intention was for DEFLECT to be ridden in a position with cover, however, the circumstances of the race meant DEFLECT travelled wide and without cover and as a consequence was not able to finish the race off. He said today from an awkward draw in what was anticipated to be a slowly run race he did not issue any firm riding instructions for DEFLECT. He said when the race was being slowly run in the early stages, D Nikolic, the rider of DEFLECT, elected to allow the horse to go forward to race outside the lead. Mr Yiu said in the circumstances of this race he believed being ridden in this manner suited DEFLECT. COULDN'T CARE LESS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of COULDN'T CARE LESS after the race did not show any significant findings. DEFLECT and CHEERFUL HAPPINESS were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported NATIVE LANGUAGE had sustained a cut to the right hind heel.
