Racing Incident Report
When the gates opened, WE'RE BUDDIES bounded in the air and lost ground, then for the major part of the race travelled wide and without cover and after the 800 Metres was carried wider by DAILY BREAD which shifted to the outside of NO COMPROMISE to improve. NO COMPROMISE and RED FIREBALL began awkwardly. Near the 1600 Metres, LOK WAH TREASURE got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of TORI TOP. For some distance after this, LOK WAH TREASURE proved difficult to settle. At the 400 Metres, MILLENNIUM SUPREME became unbalanced when momentarily crowded for room between LOK WAH TREASURE and SPEED WINNER, both of which shifted ground. Approaching and passing the 300 Metres, HAIL WINNER was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind GREAT KID and inside DRAGON WIN which was giving ground. Near the 300 Metres, NO COMPROMISE, which was giving ground, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of CHAMPION BOY which shifted out into clear running. At the 300 Metres, RED FIREBALL was momentarily steadied away from the heels of SPEED WINNER. Over about the last 100 Metres, HAIL WINNER and RED FIREBALL raced tight and bumped on several occasions due mainly to RED FIREBALL shifting in when endeavouring to improve on the inside of TORI TOP. Just prior to the line, RED FIREBALL was steadied when crowded for room between HAIL WINNER which at this time shifted out and TORI TOP which was carried in slightly by SPEED WINNER. Apprentice M W Leung (SPEED WINNER) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in 2nd or 3rd position if possible and if the pace was slow he should lead. He said SPEED WINNER began fairly, he immediately rode the horse along vigorously hands and heels in the early stages, however, HAIL WINNER which had drawn wider on the track was showing superior speed. He said after having ridden SPEED WINNER along for about 100 Metres after the start, it became apparent to him he would not have sufficient speed to hold HAIL WINNER out, he therefore elected to steady his mount to follow that runner in the hope that it would maintain the lead. He said after HAIL WINNER crossed to the fence in front of him, that horse allowed GREAT KID to cross to the fence in front of it and consequently he was one position further back in the run than he intended. The explanation submitted by Apprentice Leung was accepted. G Schofield (FORTUNE LAD) said it had been intended to ride the horse about midfield. He said FORTUNE LAD did not begin well and immediately travelled behind midfield. He said travelling down the Back Straight he was racing between NO COMPROMISE and MILLENNIUM SUPREME, then near the 800 Metres when MILLENNIUM SUPREME shifted out, FORTUNE LAD was reluctant to hold its position between those two runners. He said throughout the race FORTUNE LAD wanted to hang both in and out and then rounding the Home Turn he endeavoured to hold CHAMPION BOY in and improve his position to follow LOK WAH TREASURE, however, at this time FORTUNE LAD hung out, he was unable to hold CHAMPION BOY in and he then became awkwardly placed on the heels of DOMINATION which was giving ground, causing him to check and shift in. He said in the Straight FORTUNE LAD continued to hang out and proved difficult to ride. The explanation submitted by G Schofield was accepted. FORTUNE LAD was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of FORTUNE LAD after the race did not reveal any significant abnormalities. TORI TOP, CHAMPION BOY and SPEED WINNER were sent for sampling.
