Racing Incident Report

BARAKA was withdrawn on 29.5.04 on veterinary grounds (mucus in the horse's trachea) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter FOREVER WIN (C Williams). Before being allowed to race again, BARAKA will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Prior to entering the Parade Ring, LUCKY PORT had an adjustment made to its left hind plate. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. As the gates opened, CHAMP DRAGON put its head down, consequently was slow to begin and raced well back. GOLD FIELD began awkwardly, shifted out and caused crowding on its outside to DONGGUAN VICTORY and DIAMOND MOON. ONLY YOU, which was to be ridden in a rearward position, was immediately steadied on jumping and shifted across behind runners to a position close to the rail but at the rear. After the 800 Metres, RAIN IN SPRING was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of WIND WINNER. Prior to straightening, SPRINTER was steadied when crowded for room between WIND WINNER and LUCKY PORT which at this time shifted to the outside of TRAVEL LEADER into clear running. In the early part of the Straight, TRAVEL LEADER got its head up and hung in. Also in the early part of the Straight, DONGGUAN VICTORY had some difficulty obtaining clear running. After the 400 Metres, GOLD FIELD and FOREVER WIN bumped. For some distance after this, GOLD FIELD raced tight between FOREVER WIN and TRAVEL LEADER. Throughout the race, WIND WINNER raced wide and without cover. Apprentice M W Leung (NOBLE WIND) explained he had been instructed to follow AHEAD A HEAD which he had anticipated would lead in the race. He said from the outside gate on jumping he rode along to go forward and clear runners on his inside. He said after the 1400 Metres he continued on to clear initially TRAVEL LEADER and then GOLD FIELD which were racing to his inside, he then shifted across to be beside AHEAD A HEAD, but about one length in front of that horse. He said after shifting to this position, it appeared S Dye, the rider of AHEAD A HEAD, commenced to steady his mount, he therefore decided to ride along, clear AHEAD A HEAD and shifted to the fence in the lead. He said after reaching the lead he allowed NOBLE WIND to continue striding along as it appeared comfortable and in his opinion having its first start in blinkers today if the horse was restrained it would not settle. NOBLE WIND was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, NOBLE WIND was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said it was noted the horse had blood present at both nostrils, however, an endoscopic examination showed no blood in the horse's trachea and therefore it is not a bleeder. He said however the endoscopic examination did show a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, NOBLE WIND will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LUCKY PORT, WIND WINNER and SPRINTER were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported DIAMOND MOON was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, DIAMOND MOON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
