Racing Incident Report

Whilst in the saddling stalls, NIGHT NINJA lost its left front plate. The horse was re-shod and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said it was suitable to race. CORAJOSO began awkwardly, bounded in the air and bumped the inside gate of its stall. PARADIS bounded in the air at the start. THOUSAND WINS was slow to begin. CHINSOLA began awkwardly. In the early stages, FAIR WIN hung in, near the 1000 Metres caused crowding on its inside to ALL FIT. W M Lai (MASTER YING) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 800 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of FAIR WIN, causing that horse which was hanging to be crowded for room and carried in across the rightful running of ALL FIT which as a result was checked. W M Lai was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 23 December 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 15 December 2004 on which day he may resume race riding. In addition, W M Lai was fined $20,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating two further racedays. GIANFANTI, which was following ALL FIT, was checked in consequence. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, WINNING POWER was checked when crowded for room between FAIR WIN which shifted out after receiving interference itself and HAPI HAPI (M Kinane) which shifted in when not properly clear. In the circumstances, it was not considered appropriate to take any action, however, M Kinane was advised to exercise more care. AMAZING ONE, which was following WINNING POWER, was checked in consequence. Near the 600 Metres, CHINSOLA and THOUSAND WINS bumped. Also near the 600 Metres, PARADIS and CORAJOSO bumped. Just prior to straightening, PARADIS was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of CORAJOSO. Near the 300 Metres, PARADIS was steadied and shifted to the inside of GIANFANTI to find clear running. Just prior to winning post, THOUSAND WINS was steadied away from the heels of AMAZING ONE. In the Straight, NIGHT NINJA hung out. C Williams (GIANFANTI) said prior to the race it was expected SOLAR EMPIRE and FAIR WIN would go forward and lead at a good tempo. He said the intention was for him to take up a position behind FAIR WIN and accordingly shortly after the start he steadied his mount and shifted across to be behind FAIR WIN which was having trouble holding its position. He said near the 800 Metres he received interference which caused him to lose further ground and as a consequence he got further back than was intended. C Williams added for a significant part of the Home Straight he had difficulty obtaining clear running and consequently he was not able to properly test GIANFANTI. The explanation submitted by C Williams was accepted. When questioned, Apprentice C K Tong (SOLAR EMPIRE) said he had been instructed to lead on the horse, however, if something was ridden forward to cross him, he should "hand up" and take a trail. He said after being boxed SOLAR EMPIRE was fractious, sat back in its stall and as a consequence began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. He said after this he rode SOLAR EMPIRE along to hold the rail and at the 1200 Metres was in the lead. He said he was aware that ZERO IN had been ridden along to go forward and after the 1000 Metres he elected to steady his mount and "hand up" to that horse having in mind the instructions he had been issued and the pace of the race which he felt was being run at a solid tempo. Mr Y O Wong, trainer of SOLAR EMPIRE, confirmed the instructions issued to Apprentice Tong. He said when Apprentice Tong rode the horse at its last start, it had drawn the outside barrier and after being ridden to go forward in the early stages ran freely and consequently did not finish the race off. He said because of this from a better draw today he had asked Apprentice Tong to go forward, however, if another runner pressed to lead he should allow that horse to cross and take cover behind it. He said he was concerned if Apprentice Tong again rode SOLAR EMPIRE along in the early stages to maintain the lead, the horse would prove difficult for him to manage and would again not finish the race off. CORAJOSO and FAIR WIN were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, CORAJOSO was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. He also noted the horse to have a laceration to its muzzle. Before being allowed to race again, CORAJOSO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of FAIR WIN after the race did not show any significant findings. WINNING POWER, ZERO IN and HAPI HAPI were sent for sampling.
