Racing Incident Report
On checking the track work which horses had done in the lead up to this race, it was noted FREE AS THE WIND had done little hard work and this matter was of concern to the Stewards. They directed that FREE AS THE WIND be examined by the Veterinary Surgeon on Friday. At this time the Veterinary Surgeon said he wished to examine FREE AS THE WIND again on Saturday after it worked. After having examined FREE AS THE WIND on Saturday he said the horse was showing signs of soreness in its off front leg as a result of an old tendon injury. Bearing this in mind and the light preparation the horse had, he was of the view it was not suitable to race. Accordingly FREE AS THE WIND was withdrawn by order of the Stewards and replaced by Standby Declared Starter WOODSIDE PARK (F Coetzee). Before racing again, FREE AS THE WIND will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the barriers, W Woods (EASY WAY) expressed concern with the action of the horse. EASY WAY was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion the horse was lame in its near side front leg and was not suitable to race. Accordingly EASY WAY was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before racing again, EASY WAY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the barriers, YUE YEE MASTER was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who was unable to detect any abnormalities and said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. Also after arriving at the barriers, WOODSIDE PARK was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who could find no abnormalities and said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. Running to the first turn, ABSOLUTE, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up and was unbalanced on the heels of FORTUNE RIVER. Rounding the Home Turn, ABSOLUTE hung out, because of this at about the 500 Metres bumped BRAVO LONGTEMPS. On straightening, RARE COLLECTION shifted out to improve, in doing so brushed ABSOLUTE which was hanging out which in turn shifted ground and made contact with BRAVO LONGTEMPS. Throughout the race, FORTUNE RIVER hung in. When asked about the improved performance of GAGNANT today compared with its run at Sha Tin on 30 May 2001, Mr K C Lo, Trainer, said the horse's last run had been over 1400 Metres on a track which was rain affected. He said on that occasion he instructed D Harrison to push forward and lead as had been the practice for this horse. Mr Lo said on that occasion GAGNANT was joined by other runners in front and over the concluding stages weakened out of the race. He said he had no criticism at all with the ride of the horse at its last previous start and did point out GAGNANT had never been successful over 1400 Metres, however had previously won a race over 1200 Metres at Sha Tin. He said the instructions today were identical to those given last run, that is from a good gate the horse be taken straight to the front and endeavour to lead all the way. Mr Lo assured the Stewards the work that GAGNANT had done going into last week's race was similar to that of the lead up to today's run and he believed the improved performance could be attributed to the difference in trip, the track conditions and also the fact that GAGNANT was able to lead unchallenged. The explanations submitted by Mr Lo were accepted. PARTIKING was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
