Racing Incident Report
When the gates opened, DESERT STORM stood flat-footed and lost a considerable amount of ground. On jumping, SUPER IDEAL got its head up and lost ground. Near the 1400 Metres, MONEY STRONG, which was proving difficult to settle, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of CHAMP DRAGON. Near the 800 Metres, ATHLETIC GOLD shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of CHAMP DRAGON. Also near the 800 Metres, SUNNY RIVIERA was steadied away from the heels of SPINNING CITY which shifted out momentarily. Prior to straightening, SUPER IDEAL was steadied when crowded for room between DESERT STRIKE and OPERA MAGIC. Also prior to straightening, SUPER IDEAL was checked when disappointed for running between OPERA MAGIC and DESERT STRIKE (D Whyte) which shifted out. As the Stewards could not be satisfied that SUPER IDEAL had fully established its rightful running between these two horses, it was decided the appropriate action to be taken was for D Whyte to be severely reprimanded. Shortly after straightening, MONEY STRONG was steadied when disappointed for running between SPINNING CITY and OPERA MAGIC (G Schofield) which shifted out slightly. G Schofield was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to exercise more care. Over the concluding stages, FIVE GRAINS got its head on the side and shifted wide on the track when being ridden out. The performance of OPERA MAGIC, which finished detached from the field, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, OPERA MAGIC will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A Delpech (CHAMP DRAGON) attributed the poor performance of the horse today to the track conditions. He said he was aware the horse had won previously on rain affected ground, however, at no stage today did it stride out. The performance of CHAMP DRAGON was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, it must perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CHAMP DRAGON was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, CHAMP DRAGON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. DESERT STRIKE, SUNNY RIVIERA and FIVE GRAINS were sent for sampling.
