Racing Incident Report

HARMONY PRINCE, first Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 6.1.03 on veterinary grounds (lame right fore). Before HARMONY PRINCE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. HIGH HILL FOREST was also withdrawn on 6.1.03 on veterinary grounds (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SONGS OF PRAISE (G Schofield). Before HIGH HILL FOREST can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. PRINCELY HORSE, which had been fractious in the gates, was slow to begin. SUPER ELITE bounded in the air at the start. EL CAPITAN, which was standing awkwardly, was slow to begin. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, A CANDY, which had been hard ridden to hold its position, was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of MR PRESIDENT which shifted in slightly. At the 200 Metres, SUPER ELITE, which was giving ground, was steadied when momentarily crowded by PRINCELY HORSE which was also giving ground. G Schofield (SONGS OF PRAISE) explained at the 800 Metres the horse became disunited in its action and as a result was badly unbalanced and lost ground sharply. He said he initially was of the opinion there may have been something seriously amiss with SONGS OF PRAISE, however, the horse regained its balance. He said he placed his mount under some pressure after the 600 Metres and when it did not respond he did not persevere to the end of the race. SONGS OF PRAISE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. Following the race, SONGS OF PRAISE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at this time he was not able to detect any significant findings, however, he will re-examine the horse tomorrow. The performance of SONGS OF PRAISE was considered unacceptable. Before the horse will be permitted to race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When SONGS OF PRAISE became unbalanced, EL CAPITAN, which was following, was hampered in consequence. EL CAPITAN commenced to give ground after the 600 Metres and finished tailed off. The performance of EL CAPITAN was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. D Whyte (SUPER ELITE) explained the horse began only fairly, was then able to work across without much effort to reach the lead on the turn out of the Straight on the first occasion. He said whilst SUPER ELITE was able to travel at a comfortable pace in the lead, because PRINCELY HORSE raced to its outside throughout, he was not able to give his mount a breather during the run. He said after straightening SUPER ELITE failed to respond to his riding and the crowding he received at the 200 Metres was of little significance. He said he had ridden SUPER ELITE in track work leading up to tonight's race, this work in his opinion was good and he believed the horse was well fancied by the stable tonight. D Whyte said he was unable to explain the manner in which SUPER ELITE finished the race off. Before SUPER ELITE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. SUPER ELITE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, SUPER ELITE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. RESOURCEFUL PRINCE, SUPER SIXTY-SIX and TELECOM PRINCE were sent for sampling.

Additional Veterinary Report (released on 9 Jan. 2003) :
SONGS OF PRAISE
As reported last night, SONGS OF PRAISE became disunited in its action at about the 800 Metres in the above race. A veterinary examination of the horse immediately following the race did not reveal any abnormalities. SONGS OF PRAISE was again examined at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes this morning. The Senior Veterinary Officer reported at this time the horse showed significant pain in both hind "hamstring" muscles and was lame in both hind legs. He said in his opinion SONGS OF PRAISE may have become disunited in its action as a result of locking one or both of its stifles.
As previously reported, SONGS OF PRAISE will not be allowed to race again until it performs satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and passes an official veterinary examination.

SUPER ELITE
After this race, SUPER ELITE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. SUPER ELITE was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer this morning at the stables of Trainer K W Lui. It was reported the horse was showing stiffness together with muscle soreness in both hind legs.
As previously reported, SUPER ELITE will be required to pass an official veterinary examination before racing again.
