Racing Incident Report

At about 4:15 pm today, Trainer D Hill contacted the Stewards and advised them he had been made aware ETERNAL FUN had been mistakenly treated with Swell Down by his stable staff this morning. This is a topical treatment commonly used on horses' legs. As such ETERNAL FUN was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. As a consequence of this, Mr Hill was found by the Stewards to be in breach of Rule 50(2) in that he had been negligent in the running of his stable. For this breach, Mr Hill was fined $15,000. INDUSTRIAL PRIDE began awkwardly, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of KOH-I-NOOR. Shortly after the start, GOLDEN SPIRIT was checked when crowded between BUENO BUENO and GOOD NEWS which was taken out by ABLE WIN which shifted ground abruptly. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, BUENO BUENO shifted in and bumped ABLE WIN. Some inconvenience was caused to NATIVE LANGUAGE which was following. At the 1000 Metres, GOOD NEWS, which was proving difficult to settle, shifted out abruptly when awkwardly placed close to the heels of COUNTRY DRAGON. As a result of this, KOH-I-NOOR was hampered and carried wider. Near the 200 Metres, COUNTRY DRAGON, which was giving ground, was brushed by KONRAD THE GREAT which shifted out. At the 100 Metres, KOH-I-NOOR, which was giving ground, was momentarily steadied when crowded for room between INDY'S GEM and NATIVE LANGUAGE. Prior to the winning post, ABLE WIN and KONRAD THE GREAT bumped. A Marcus (SOLAR EMPIRE) said he had been instructed by the trainer to ride the horse with cover if possible tonight. He said SOLAR EMPIRE began well, proved difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up. He said when COUNTRY DRAGON improved around him at the 1000 Metres, he was satisfied to let that horse go in an attempt to carry out his riding instructions, however, when COUNTRY DRAGON crossed to the fence, he immediately steadied the tempo and because of this SOLAR EMPIRE again got its head up and was difficult to settle. He said rather than continuing to fight the horse to maintain its cover, he elected to shift out and allow the horse to stride. The Stewards will confirm the riding instructions issued to A Marcus by Mr Y O Wong, trainer of SOLAR EMPIRE, at a date to be fixed. When questioned, G Schofield (BUENO BUENO) explained after the 600 Metres he became aware another runner was improving to his outside, however, he was not aware that this horse was NATIVE LANGUAGE. He said BUENO BUENO was only travelling fairly at this time and at about the 500 Metres he shifted to the outside of INDY'S GEM so he would not be held up for running. He said he immediately placed BUENO BUENO under pressure, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and this enabled NATIVE LANGUAGE to continue forward around him. He said on straightening he endeavoured to shift NATIVE LANGUAGE wider on the track to obtain running between that horse and KOH-I-NOOR, was not able to do so and as a result was disappointed for this run. He said for some distance after this he continued to be held up for running between NATIVE LANGUAGE and KOH-I-NOOR and at the 200 Metres had to check his mount when KOH-I-NOOR commenced to give ground. G Schofield was advised his riding in the middle stages had come under notice and on this occasion the Stewards would record his explanation. Whilst the Stewards considered the riding of S K Sit (GOLDEN SPIRIT) in the run to the line did not affect the horse's finishing position and accordingly a breach of Rule 100(2) did not occur, they did however advise S K Sit he must ride all mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race whenever possible. D Dunn (KONRAD THE GREAT) was reprimanded for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post. NATIVE LANGUAGE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, NATIVE LANGUAGE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was carried out and this showed a moderate amount of mucus in the trachea of the horse. Before being permitted to race again, NATIVE LANGUAGE will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. KONRAD THE GREAT and ABLE WIN were sent for sampling.
