Racing Incident Report
ROYAL EXCHANGE began awkwardly and got its head up. SURE FORTUNE was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied when crowded for room between SALENTINO which shifted in and LOVE ON EARTH which was carried out by STAR WARRIOR which shifted ground after being bumped by BACK SEAT DRIVER which began awkwardly. After the 800 Metres, SALENTINO became unbalanced when bumped by ETERNAL START which shifted out. ROYAL EXCHANGE, which was racing behind SALENTINO and racing greenly, became unbalanced as a consequence. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, ROYAL EXCHANGE hung out and was steadied away from the heels of AFICIONADO. Apprentice P H Lo (SMILING FOREST) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 100 Metres he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting out when not clear of LOVE ON EARTH, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and blunder. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards considered the appropriate penalty was for Apprentice P H Lo's licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Monday 19 January 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Sunday 4 January 2004. After the 100 Metres, BACK SEAT DRIVER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of SALENTINO which shifted in. In the Straight, ROYAL EXCHANGE hung in. Throughout the race, AFICIONADO raced wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. ROYAL EXCHANGE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, ROYAL EXCHANGE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, ROYAL EXCHANGE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SHARE THE FUN and EASY PUNCH were sent for sampling.
