Racing Incident Report
GOLDEN SUN was slow to begin, then throughout the race from the outside barrier raced wide and without cover. Shortly after the start, EQUATOR KID was crowded for room between DAY OR NIGHT which shifted in and CALIFORNIASUNSHINE which shifted out. Near the 1700 Metres, NORTHERNER, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of GREENESSY. Near the 1400 Metres, CALIFORNIASUNSHINE became unbalanced when momentarily crowded for room inside NORTHERNER. For a considerable distance after straightening, LUCKSWELL was held up and unable to improve between DR WELL and GREENESSY. Near the 250 Metres, LUCKSWELL was shifted towards the outside of GREENESSY into clear running. Near the 300 Metres, DAY OR NIGHT was struck over the nose by the whip of M Rodd (BEAR DOMINANCE). Near the winning post, BEAR DOMINANCE got its head on the side and shifted in towards DAY OR NIGHT. Because of this, M Rodd stopped riding and straightened and did not ride his mount out to the winning post as he normally would. B Prebble (CALIFORNIASUNSHINE) said he had been instructed if possible to lead on the horse. He said throughout the race CALIFORNIASUNSHINE did not stride out as he thought it should and was not comfortable. CALIFORNIASUNSHINE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIASUNSHINE after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of CALIFORNIASUNSHINE, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIASUNSHINE will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. NORTHERNER, LUCKSWELL and DR WELL were sent for sampling.
