Racing Incident Report
CHOICE AND CHANCE began very awkwardly, lost ground and then shifted in abruptly. On jumping, BRAVISSIMO and TUMBLER bumped. After the 600 Metres, TUMBLER, which had improved into a narrow run between CHOICE AND CHANCE and MR PRESIDENT, was checked when momentarily crowded for room inside MR PRESIDENT which in turn was racing tight inside GUSCOTT. The occurrence in the opinion of the Stewards was accidental. Near the 500 Metres, CHOICE AND CHANCE was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of WONDERFUL LIFE. R Fradd (EL VIENTO) said he had today been instructed by Mr S Woods, trainer of the horse, that from the outside barrier he was immediately to steady EL VIENTO, shift it across behind runners to a position on the fence, then he was to remain on the fence and not make his run around horses as in the past the horse had shown a tendency to hang in. He added when the horse saw daylight too early in the Straight in the past, it had not finished its race off. He said in accordance with the instructions, he immediately took EL VIENTO across behind runners to the rear and at the 1100 Metres shifted to the rail where he remained racing despite the opportunity for him to improve between BRAVISSIMO and SUPER WONGCHOY along the Back Straight. He said near the 500 Metres he immediately shifted his mount out, however, it became apparent to him that he would be required to shift to a position at least six wide if he were to improve around runners and in view of the strict instructions he had been given, he decided to shift back to the fence behind BRAVISSIMO. He said for a short distance after straightening, he felt a run might eventuate on the inside of BRAVISSIMO and because of this he remained racing behind that horse, however, when this run did not eventuate, he shifted EL VIENTO to the outside of BRAVISSIMO at the 200 Metres into clear running where the horse then closed the race off strongly. Mr Woods confirmed the riding instructions issued to R Fradd and informed him that those instructions were to be strictly adhered to where possible. He said he felt these instructions were in the best interests of the horse given the characteristics as previously displayed when making its run around the field. He said he was of the firm opinion EL VIENTO is best suited when ridden with cover and he was adamant the horse should not make its run on the outside of the field. Mr Woods expressed complete satisfaction with the manner in which R Fradd had ridden EL VIENTO. Mr Woods said in future if EL VIENTO is drawn more favourably, it may be ridden further forward, but he will instruct the rider to find cover and ensure the horse does not see daylight too early in its races. The Stewards advised R Fradd his riding in particular from the 600 Metres until the 200 Metres had caused them concern and while it is expected riders would follow instructions given to them wherever possible, occasions arise where a rider is expected to show some initiative. Mr Woods was told the Stewards would never tell him how his horses should be ridden, however, he should not issue riders with instructions that are so binding as to deny them the opportunity of exercising judgement. Mr Woods was also advised if a rider is found to be in breach of the Rules in carrying out his strict instructions, he himself could also be found in breach of the same Rule. SUPER WONGCHOY and BUDDIES POWER were sent for sampling.
